Gregory Lewis - Bethanga 2014

Bethanga is a former mining town on a mountain near Albury, NSW. On one side it overlooks Lake Hume. On the other, rich farmland stretches to the horizon.

My race-modified 1967 Jaguar E-Type was just back from a major overhaul so I decided to visit Bethanga again, carrying my N75, a Sigma 24-105mm zoom, a 300mm f/4 and two rolls of Ektar.

The car was highly competitive from the mid-1990s until 2005 when raced by my father Jack Lewis. I am not a race driver of any sort and the days of this car sprinting through the Tasmanian countryside or around tracks at Eastern Creek or Phillip Island are long gone. The car itself however is as quick as ever. Vroom!

First stop was the Hume Dam that holds back three million megalitres. A peaceful spot with a few scattered trees as a reminder of the massive forests that once stood here.

The 750m Bethanga Bridge at Bellbridge is a popular spot for wedding photos. This time my car stood in for the bride and groom.

From Kurrajong Gap the view across Lake Hume is spectacular. High above the town there are panoramic views of the Talgarno region farmlands.

Bethanga itself seems almost deserted. A small General Store, a school, the Courthouse Hotel and a few dozen houses make up almost all of the town centre. Most of the area is open fields on steep mountain sides.
