Gregory Lewis - Gundagai

Gundagai is a town of around 2,000 people beside the Hume Highway 390km SW of Sydney, on the hills above the Murrumbidgee River. I spent a relaxing day walking to historic buildings and enjoying life in a typical Australian country town. I carried a Nikon F6 with Ektar 100 and Portra 800. I used Sigma 24mm f/1.4, Tamron 90mm Macro and Nikon 300mm f/4 lenses.

The wide flood plain shows how impressive the 900km Murrumbidgee must have been before the Burrinjuck and Blowering dams.

The Murrumbidgee only flows it did before white settlement during times of extreme flooding.

The original wooden bridges still stand but are in very poor condition. I suspect they are close to being condemned for safety reasons despite their obviously huge historic and tourist significance.

An museum of local photos includes a view of the Murrumbidgee during the 1900 flood.

The town centre is a delightful mix of new and old buildings, expansive parks, the ANZAC Grove War Memorial and an excellent museum.

The railway closed in 1984, but the station and some of the yard has been retained as the Gundagai Railway Museum.
