Gregory Lewis - Seymour Railway Heritage Centre

As is probably obvious from several of my previous posts I am very keen on trains. A trip to the SRHC Open Day was particularly rewarding for me.

I carried two cameras — a Nikon F75 loaded with Portra 800 (rated at EI 400) and a Nikon F6 loaded with Ektar. I used a Sigma 24mm or Tamron 90mm for all shots.

The first series of photos was taken on the F6. As usual every shot was perfectly exposed and focused. Using this camera is one of the great joys of my life. It just feels right every time I pick it up and reacts so fast that my reflexes are always the limiting factor. Even with static subjects the ease of use and ability to fire at the instant I have the thought to do so is uncanny.

The F6 has put the fun back into my photography in a way that digital cameras never did. I drove my 1970 Jaguar 420G which is visible in the next shot.

The open day had been organised on the same day as a steam and railmotor excursion from Melbourne. A lot of moving around trying different vantage points followed, from the re-coaling siding to the Symour Station platforms. A large crowd had made the trip and it was most entertaining to watch the train workings as they ran short trips up and down the line.

The second series were taken on the F75. This is a fine camera when used with fast, good quality lenses. The electronics and shutter are first class. Even in tricky indoor lighting with very slow shutter speeds every frame was sharp and well exposed.
