Gregory Lewis - Shepparton Motor Museum

The Shepparton Motor Museum features a colourful collection of cars, vintage motorbikes and bicycles. A visit with my son proved to be a wonderful day out. The exhibits were well worth the trip, as was lunch at the museum cafe and browsing the antique shop next door.

I brought a Nikon F6 and two Tamron lenses — a 15-30mm f/2.8 and a 45mm f/1.8. Both have excellent vibration control so speeds of 1/15 were easily achievable. Both lenses were at f/4 for all shots.

This first series was taken on Portra 400 at E.I. 320.

The bicycle exhibition was excellent. Well restored machines were displayed before a backdrop of historical photos.

On a subsequent trip I used the same camera and lenses but tried some Fuji Superior 1600. Testing had shown me that the speed was a little optimistic but this is 100% useable at E.I. 800, making it the fastest colour film I have used.

Bright exterior shots are exactly the wrong application for this film, and yet the results were much better than expected.

Indoors the Superior 1600 gave more subtle colours but with even more grain. This film has now been discontinued, so I will go back to Portra 800.
