Gregory Lewis - Winton Historic Racing

My father and brother often bought their classic race cars to this event. I still enjoy the colour and excitement of the day, and the array of fine cars in the car park.

I had with me my Nikon F6, Nikon 70-200mm f/4 VR, Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and two rolls of Kodak Portra 800. Exposure compensation was left at +1.0. I slightly reduce the red channel in DxO PhotoLab when processing scans of this film. In deep shade I also reduce the cyan channel. All images here are resized to 4k resolution. As usual, my film scans look exactly as I want to be when viewed on my Plasma HD TV.

The Tamron lens was used around the car park where vehicles covering almost 100 years of motoring history were on display. This lens was locked at f/8 and zoomed to the 30mm position. The Vibration Control was switched off in full sunlight, such as the shot above, where exposures were between 1/400 and 1/1000. In the pit area the VR was turned on, with exposures in the vicinity of 1/20.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 was purchased before Covid shut down my touring. This was the only the second time I had used it. I am very pleased with the results. It looks good at any aperture. I used it between f/4 and f/8 in this series. The final two shots here were taken on the 70-200mm at f/8.

Once the racing began I changed to the Nikon 70-200mm. This lens doesn’t impress me much in contrasty light at f/4 but at f/5.6 it is everything I expect in a light-weight zoom. It’s always my fault if an image is not sharp. There was plenty of light on this day so I used f/8 for an average shutter speed of 1/1600, as recorded by the F6 in its internal data logger.
