Gregory Lewis - Camaros & Firebirds

April 2022

Albury is halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, making it a popular location for annual displays by a variety of car clubs. I attended a colourful exhibition by owners of Camaros and Firebirds.

I dusted off my first film camera, a Nikon F75, fitted with a Tamron 45mm. Film was a recently expired but always refrigerated roll of Ektar. Some of the scans showed a dull brown cast in the deep shadows, something I have seen before even in fresh Ektar. This may have been the camera underexposing but my best guess is that I need to give Ektar more light at my next outing.

Overall, I was very pleased with the results. As always, Ektar has vivid colours that need some calming down in post processing. When there are large red areas in the frame I needed to reduce both the red channel and the red tone curve to get more realistic colours.

Then again, Ektar is not designed to be true-to-life, unlike the long lamented Fuji Reala. Ektar has fantasyland colours, for having fun!
