Gregory Lewis - Winton Festival of Speed

August 2022

Winton Raceway in North East Victoria hosted its annual event for classic cars of all makes. Owners polished up display cars for a colourful event.

Mustangs were featured in the carpark, with ancient and modern examples to view. I used my Nikon F6 with Porta 800 film, set with exposure compensation at +1. My walkaround lens was a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art. On reflection, this lens was too wide, giving a slightly exaggerated “big nose” perspective to some shots. I will use my Tamron 45mm next time for closeups.

I was attracted to the colours that owners had chosen to restore their historic road cars. Many appeared to be authentic factory hues but some were clearly imaginative choices.

Race cars ranged from road-registered sports cars to more specialised weekend speedsters and historic sedans from 50 years ago, or more.

Out on the track, amateur and professional drivers alike tested their skills on the 3km circuit, trying to get into the record books with laps of under 100 seconds.

I used my new Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF-S lens, setting f/8 at 1/1000 but had a few blurry shots. I will put that down to an inadequate panning technique. The F6 certainly focused quickly and accurately.

The first three shots below were taken at the full 400mm. The final two were at 200mm.
